Archiving Process: SIDAD Graphs
The graphs are as old as 47-year-old analogue prints on tracing paper. There are special steps to take. Here is what we have done.
Ironing Cumulative Records
One of the purposes of the project is to serve Dr. Barrett’s accomplishments. She left a huge collection of data taking from Walter E. Fernald State School.
The collection consists of cumulative records and behavior data cards. The condition of the preservation of the cumulative records is not well; they were put in folders in a disorderly manner (Photos 1-3). Therefore, there are a lot of creases on paper that would cause on the difficulty on scanning and digitizing those graphs. Moreover, each session’s data was put together with a metal paperclip that it rusted and stuck on papers.
To the direction that we will archive these data in a digital format, we need to prepare these graphs ready to be treated (Photo 4).
What we were told to do for this by professional on digital archiving, was to iron the creases, change the paperclips from the metal ones to the plastics so that it won’t rust, and use acid free folders to keep graphs.
Also we were told to use cotton gloves when we treat graphs so that we won’t soil graphs by handling it.

- Steps of this process are:
- iron the creases
- change the paperclips from the metal ones to the plastics
- use acid free folders to keep graphs use cotton gloves when we treat graphs so that we won’t soil graphs by handling it.
Digitization
For digitizing graphs, we used HP Scanjet 8270 for scanning, photoshop CS for graphical editing on iMac, and SQL database communicate with asp interface.
The most labor-intensive part of disitization is scanning.
We developed both step-by-step task procedure as well as the checklist.
For each session information, there is Behavior Data Card.
BDC is keeps truck of all the related information for the session. It looks like this:
When digitizing, some information from Behavior Data Card are used.
To archive data, there are many ways to accomplish. If there is any inquiry about performance analysis based planning and decision-making of the digitization and creating digital library of this website, please contact to dr.bea.barrett.legacy@gmail.com.
